Glen Keane Visit
Famous animator, one of the top animators on the planet now, my hero, Glen Keane, visited 6 Point last night. Through the whole time, when he was talking, I was like a little kid listening to a beautiful fairy tale. He is the kind of person that people would feel very comfortable around him. I was trying to be professional, and not be a fan girl. But man, I am such a fan!!!
Not just to his art but to him as a person as well. He is such a nice guy!!! All the interns who are from the up-north-Canada, were so happy to see him, and some of us were so exited and we couldn't talk normal anymore.
Finally understand how it feels like to see a celebrity...!!!
Since I couldnt act like a fan girl, so for those of you who are reading this post, forgive me for acting like a super fan here..but I am sure most of you would do the same thing !!! haha
He shared with us some of his experience in animating,
"Spend time on your "Golden Poses"
"Beliving your characters"
"Read the book Art and Fear"
"Dont go too specific at the storyboard stage,Know the main point of each shot, Then animate and make choices towards that point."
"Know your ending."
"Dont draw what they do, draw what they think."
"Understand the character"
He also said it doesnt matter if your story can be made in live action, you can still do it in animation, since animation has its own power.
And it was really cool that he told me he actually animates twice when he is working on a scene. Once with scribbly rough drawings, to try out how things move, that may take an hour or two; then pick out the key poses, then animate with those again, but with more structual drawings this time. The second round will be a much longer process.
For his way of animating, I think it perfectly present the skills while keeping the most raw and original feeling of yours. The only thing I am a bit suspicious about is that, does this method only apply to those ppl who are already so good at what they are doing? If we as young animators want to do the same thing, do we need to practice our drawing skills at the first place? I believe the answer is probably yes.
But anyways, I would like to try it when I am working on my film!! Haha...
Thanks Glen, you rock!!! Too bad for us you dont have a blog......................................
